Description
The spectacled cobra (Naja naja)also known as the asian cobra, or binocellate cobra.This species one of the most common species that found all over the world. Mainly this species is most common in asian continent and distribution in india, pakistan, bangladesh,myanmar,nepal,sri lank. It can found elsewhere in india. it is a member of 'big four' snakes [big four snakes are; common krait (Bungarus caeruleus), indian saw-scaled viper( Echis carinatus), russell's viper( daboia russelii), indian cobra( Naja naja)]. In this 'big four' snakes in india, this species is most Responsible for snake bites. according to a survey around 10,000 people killing by the bite of this cobra. The colour and marking depends on its geographical location. the species can be brownish, reddish brown, yellowish or grey. It can found scrub forest, dense forest, near the human habitation and in the agriculture fields. This species can easily find by its hood marks. It may live up to 30 years.
Venom
This species contains a neurotoxin venom which attacks the cardiac muscle. Its venom used in research, making of antibiotics and anti cancer medications.
Food habit
It diets on rats,toads,mice,birds and small snakes. Nearly reported that an indian cobra feeds on a juvenile python(Python molurus).
Reproduction
The indian cobras are oviparous and lay their eggs between the months of april and july.The female snake usually lays between 10 and 30 eggs in rat holes or termite mounds and the eggs hatch 48 to 69 days later.
In culture
In hindu mythology the indian cobra is greatly respected. The hindu god shiva is often depicted with a cobra called vasuki, coiled around his neck, symbolizing his mastery over "maya" or the world-illusion. Snake charmers with their cobras in a wicker basket are a common sight in many parts of india only during the nag panchami or naagula chavithi festival.
